Stratum Basale or Gerinativum - deepest layer that rests directly on the basement membrane. This layer is capable of undergoing mitosis.

Stratum Spinosum - just above the S. Basale, compose of several layers of spiny shaped cells

Stratum Granulosum - two to three layers of flattened cells that lost their nuclei (non-living)

Stratum Lucidum - found only in thick skin (palms and soles of your feet) composed of one to two layers of flat transparent cells.

Stratum Corneum - the outermost layer of the epidermis, and about 25 layers of dead dry keratin rich cells. (serves as a barrier)
